Students invited to free S.T.E.M.-A-PALOOZA event April 13Los estudiantes están invitados al evento gratuito S.T.E.M.-A-PALOOZA – 13 de abril

Families with students in Kindergarten through 8th grade are invited to attend the 4th annual S.T.E.M.-A-PALOOZA event on Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cowherd Middle School, 441 N. Farnsworth Avenue. The District 131 event will feature a free interactive science, technology, engineering and math festival.

District 131 students will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math activities. Parents attending can learn how to continue STEM learning at home through activities with their children.

The event is set up for kids to move freely from booth to booth to try new things, learn, and most of all, have fun.

Featured this year will be the Lego robotics team from Simmons Middle School, who will be showcasing their work. A course will be set up for the kids to practice their robot programing skills.

“We’re growing our event this year, with more things for kids to experience and learn,” said Christopher Heath, the district’s STEM Coordinator. “This year we really wanted to focus on a STEM future, and the potential job opportunities available to student if they stay on the STEM education pathway through high school and beyond”

Heath said that getting kids, particularly young kids, interested in STEM is critical in today’s world. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that between 2012 and 2022, STEM jobs would grow to more than 9 million jobs, a growth rate of 13 percent.

Heath adds that women and minority groups are underrepresented in STEM-related careers, proportionally based on their population size, and that hooking students’ interest in STEM early is important.

“S.T.E.M.-A-PALOOZA plays a role in helping to hook students early in STEM by showing them a world of possibilities, while showing parents how they can help grow their budding scientist outside of school hours. We show parents simple experiments and activities the kids can do at home and hopefully inspire them to consider a STEM field as a possible career path.”

Now in its fourth year, S.T.E.M.-A-PALOOZA will welcome outside groups to the event, including, ComEd, Nicor, NIU Spanish Club and Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), North Central College Women in Science Club, Fox Metro Water Reclamation District, Cabot Labs, the Aurora Public Library, Chicago’s Leading Edge (Women in Aviation), Chasewood Learning, Red Oak Nature Center, Aurora University School of Nursing, American Nuclear Society, SciTech Museum, the APD Mobile Crime Scene Unit, and Hollister Inc.

Las familias con estudiantes en kindergarten a 8vo grado están invitadas a asistir al 4to evento anual S.T.E.M.- A-PALOOZA, el sábado 13 de abril de 10 a.m. a 2 p.m., en la Escuela Secundaria Cowherd ubicada en 441 N. Farnsworth Avenue. El evento del Distrito 131 presentará un festival interactivo gratuito de ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas (STEM por sus siglas en inglés Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).

Los estudiantes del Distrito 131 tendrán la oportunidad de participar en actividades prácticas de ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas. Los padres/madres que asisten aprenden cómo continuar el aprendizaje STEM en casa a través de actividades con sus hijos(as).

El evento está instalado para que los niños(as) se muevan libremente de banca en banca, intenten cosas nuevas, aprendan y principalmente, se diviertan.

Este año tendremos la presentación del equipo de robótica de Lego de la Escuela Secundaria Simmons, quienes exhibirán su trabajo. Se establecerá un curso para que los niños(as) practiquen sus habilidades de programación de robots.

“Este año estamos expandiendo nuestro programa, con más cosas para que los niños(as) experimenten y aprendan” expresó Christopher Heath, el coordinador de STEM del distrito. “Este año queremos enfocarnos en el futuro de STEM y las posibles oportunidades laborales disponibles para el estudiante si permanecen en el camino de la educación STEM hasta la preparatoria y más allá.

Heath expresó que es importante en el mundo de hoy que los niños(as), particularmente los más chicos estén interesados en STEM. El Instituto de Estadísticas Laborales reporta que entre 2012 y 2022, los empleos de STEM incrementarán a más de 9 millones de empleos, una tasa de incremento del 13 por ciento.

Heath agregó que las mujeres y los grupos minoritarios que carecen de representación significativa en las profesiones relacionadas con STEM, es proporcionalmente en función al tamaño de su población y es importante atraer el interés del estudiante en STEM a temprana edad.

“S.T.E.M.-A-PALOOZA juega un papel importante en captar la atención de los estudiantes a temprana edad en STEM, mostrándoles un mundo de posibilidades, a medida que se muestra a los padres cómo podemos ayudar a desarrollar a su incipiente científico fuera del horario escolar. A los padres les mostramos experimentos y actividades simples que los niños(as) pueden hacer en casa y, con suerte, inspirarlos a considerar un campo STEM como una posible trayectoria profesional.

Ahora en su cuarto año, STEM A-PALOOZA le dará la bienvenida a grupos exteriores al evento, incluido ComEd, Nicor, el Club de Español de NIU y la Sociedad de Aprovechamiento de Chicanos y Nativos americanos en Ciencia (SACNAS), Mujeres en el club de ciencia de North Central College, Fox Metro Reclamation District, Laboratorios Cabot, la Biblioteca Pública de Aurora, Chicago’s Leading Edge (Mujeres en aviación), Chasewood Learning, Red Oak Nature Center, Escuela de enfermería de la Universidad de Aurora, Sociedad Nuclear Americana, Museo SciTech, la Unidad móvil de escena del crimen del Departamento de Policía de Aurora y Hollister Inc.
